Sport England have reported that there are 2 million fewer women than men regularly participating in sport and exercise.  British Canoeing and other sporting bodies have seen this as a call to arms and want to help to increase the number of women  getting involved in paddling activities such as kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding.

A recent survey by This Girl Can (2020) showed that 13 million women said they would like to increase their participation in sport and physical activity, including 6 million women who are not currently active.  The main barriers to women not participating seem to fall into three general areas that include anxieties around appearance, ability and other societal pressures and judgements.

To try and counteract these trends and to actively recruit women into paddling, British Canoeing have devised the #ShePaddles initiative where ambassadors are chosen yearly to promote the fantastic variety and benefits of paddlesport.

You can read more about it here.

What does this mean for WWW?

Kathy will continue her work promoting our ‘This Girl Can’ group and get them back out on and in the water early next season.  Our ‘This Woman Can’ group will be active all through the off-season with a ‘Winter Wellness’ programme starting with some sea swims and paddles before it gets too cold.  Paddling will resume properly again in April 2024.

Kathy is also available to book for 1-2-1 Introduction to Sea Swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding lessons so get yourself out there and on the water.
