| Why Portmellon is AWESOME 🙂 | Why Portmellon is a PAIN 🙁 |
| Secluded, quiet cove | We can’t use it on an easterly wind |
| Paddleshed is less than 100m away from the beach | There is no beach 2hrs either side of high tide which means accessing the sea from the slipway |
| Shallow gradient into the sea | Parking is in short supply and the car park is expensive. |
Current Problems
We are having to cancel our regular timetabled sessions as this persistent easterly won’t leave us alone!! When the easterly has left us briefly, our staff are either already busy with other things or we have not been quick enough to get a viable group together quickly enough to make anything happen.
Possible Solutions
If you have flexibility in your week then join our SPOND group ‘Impromptu Paddling Peeps’ where we will post last minute pop-up sessions. You sign up on spond and then pay £15 cash or by BACS on arrival.
Otherwise, sign up to our regular sessions as they work for you and we will contact you to let you know if they are running as planned or not. The apps we use for wind speed and direction are;
-
- XC Weather
-
- MET Office
Our remit is 10mph and can go out in all winds except for easterlies!
We use the ‘Tide Times app’ and ‘2026 Mevagissey Tide Booklet’ to see what kind of entry and egress we will have to the sea. Beach entry is preferable but there is no beach 2hrs either side of high tide so we want the sea to be calm enough to use the slipway safely.
It will all calm down again soon I’m sure and then we can plan as many paddling sessions as we like then 🙂
